Are Na'vi nativists the new Trekkies? Take a look at this clever Avatar spoof before answering.
The goofy viral video "L.A.R.P. Live Avatar Role Playing" has nabbed more than 100,000 YouTube views and hundreds of comments since its Friday post. Featuring a bunch of blue-painted Wisconsin jokers trying to commune with nature, and each other, it's a lighthearted romp that could be a vision of things to come.
Why? Avatar marks one of those rare moments in history when the world's economic, sociopolitical, technological and artistic energies merge seamlessly to form an overpowering zeitgeist. Na'vi fever has been catching hold on Earth, from the Palestinian territories to the mountains of China, with nativists and capitalists alike seizing upon the film's post-colonial tropes in hopes of furthering their own causes or bank accounts.
James Cameron's stunning sci-fi adventure already became the highest-grossing film of all time. The movie's titanic cultural impact should be sealed for good when Avatar wins the Academy Award for Best Picture next month.
