Tetris has sold 100 million paid downloads on mobile devices since 2005, making it the most successful mobile game of all time, EA Mobile and Blue Planet Software said Thursday.
Tetris has been around for 25 years and has become so culturally penetrating that it can be played on the sides of skyscrapers. Electronic Arts says the game's greatest growth has been on mobile devices, which should come as little surprise considering that the Game Boy version of Tetris sold 35 million copies and put the system on the map – a direct result of the game's design being perfect for small pick-up-and-put-down play sessions.
"After Tetris' success with the Game Boy in 1989, we always hoped that potential would carry over into today’s mobile devices. It’s a testament to the game’s staying power that it remains popular on today’s most modern technology," said Henk Rogers, CEO of Blue Planet Software.
A recent study suggested that those who frequently played games like Tetris could potentially stave off the mental deficiencies that coincide with aging.
Tetris celebrated its 25th anniversary in June 2009.
