Sony will delay the worldwide release of its upcoming Motion Controller for PlayStation 3 to the fall, it said Wednesday.

The controller, which combines motion sensors with camera-based position tracking, was originally slated to be released this spring. The peripheral, which does not yet have a final name, will now be going up against Microsoft’s full-body Xbox controller Project Natal, which it will release in the 2010 holiday season.

The setback may have more to do with software development delays rather than the hardware itself: “We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users,” said Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kaz Hirai in a statement.

Sony said in its statement that it will “vigorously promote the Motion Controller as the de facto controller of the PS3 platform.” Sony has already announced several titles that will use the Motion Controller, including new versions of Ape Escape, Echochrome and Resident Evil 5.

If the delay is indeed to make more time for software development, then it’s probably a good thing Sony is pushing the Motion Controller back. After all, if there isn’t any must-have software on day one to really generate consumer buzz, then the thing might as well be dead on arrival.
