The next James Bond movie might be moodier than most if Sam Mendes takes the reins. Though MGM declined to confirm negotiations with the British-born director, chatter regarding Mendes' prospects for helming the next Bond adventure is gaining decibel strength this week.

Variety reports that Mendes is a Bond front-runner. Best known for brooding dramas, Mendes showed some flair for crime-soaked mayhem in 2002 when he cast current 007 star Daniel Craig in Road to Perdition, the bleak film adaptation of Max Allan Collins' graphic novel.

Though MGM and the Bond producers have not officially firmed up their choice of director, they earlier nailed down a script by ace writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon), who joined Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace team Neal Purvis and Robert Wade on the sequel screenplay.
