A new run of DVDs and Blu-ray discs from the Star Trek universe delivers a selection of fan-favorite episodes and a look at an opening voyage that never was.
On Dec. 15, Paramount and CBS Home Entertainment will release Star Trek: The Original Series Season 3 Blu-ray, a set that includes both the final run of the 1960s series and one of the first episodes ever produced.
The rarely seen alternate pilot episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (video above), will hit fans' screens for the first time as part of the collection. CBS reports that a film collector in Germany "acquired the unique print several years ago and recently brought it to the attention of CBS Home Entertainment and its distributor Paramount Home Entertainment. The physical 35-mm film print was transferred to HD video before it was transported to the United States this past September."
Featuring a complete digital restoration, the never-aired episode includes an alternative version of Captain James T. Kirk's opening "Space, the final frontier" monologue, darker and moodier music and an extended action sequence.
Meanwhile, next Tuesday brings the DVD release of Best of Star Trek The Original Series and Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The original series disc includes the aired version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," along with "Space Seed," "A Piece of the Action" and "Journey to Babel." The Next Generation DVD offers "Relics," "The Inner Light," "Cause and Effect" and "Tapestry."
