Controversial writer Douglas Rushkoff, author of Life, Inc., has written a graphic novel that will help set up the universe for a new videogame from the makers of Company of Heroes.

The first issue of the comic, titled X, is available at a viral website set up to promote the as-yet-untitled new game from developer Smoking Gun.

Rushkoff is the author of Life, Inc., a non-fiction book critical of the corporatization of contemporary life. His 2001 documentary The Merchants of Cool, aired on the PBS show Frontline, explored the way that rebellion is marketed to teenagers.

Illustrated by the game's lead concept artist Cheoljoo Lee and game maker Younger Yang, the comic deals heavily in government conspiracy and the secret origins of man. The graphic novel will be released next year and previewed online over the next four weeks.

"This multi-faceted, multi-media approach brings new dimension to the epic struggle that we're talking about here: nothing short of how humanity defines itself," Rushkoff said in a press release.

As a regular columnist for the counter-culture magazine Arthur, Rushkoff could be to Smoking Gun's game what Orson Scott Card was to Shadow Complex – a polarizing contributor that draws ire from the opposite side of the political spectrum.
