BIFF! POW! THWAP! To the Batmobile Robin! The two most iconic TV superhero rides, the Batmobile and the Green Hornet’s Black beauty, are hitting the auction block tomorrow night in New York City in replica form. And anyone with a computer has a shot at buying them.
Driving about in a Batmobile sounds like short-lived novelty. But what about driving around town recognized unequivocally as a super-hero to children across the globe? The proceeds of the auction of the Batmobile, Black Beauty and other items benefit Life Project for Africa.
So it’s all about the kids. It has nothing to do with a 705 horsepower, 514 cubic inch powered ride complete with flame-thrower to revert grown men to babbling children and turn more heads than a Car-B-Que on the interstate.
The Batmobile, outside of having an engine block bigger than your cubicle, is fitted with an adjustable air-ride and some more modern accoutrements. Based on the 1954 Lincoln Futura and first debut in the 1966 TV series, the custom build complete with roll-up dash has an estimated value of $300,000. We’re hoping they didn’t forget the nail-spreader and the bat-phone.
The Black Beauty, although valued at only $150,000, is more of the super-hero connoisseur’s ride. Based on the 1966 Chrysler Imperial, the Black Beauty is a ride that could slip past you as normal street-going car—if you’re color-blind and deaf. With a name like the Black Beauty there is not a shortage of green. Headlights, window-tint, neon lighting, it’s all green. And we don’t mean the earthy-crunchy kind either. Add a 440 cubic-inch block pushing 525hp and strobe-lights and it's hardly the way to slip past the baddies. But you can’t argue with gadgetry like five TV’s, smoke-screen behind the flip-down license plate and remote-control rocket-launcher/Gatling gun system. If you can turn down that kind of toy-store debauchery you ought to check your pulse.
Of course these toys are too rich for the likes of us and likely yours too. But have no fear. You can always settle for a cheaper yet equally satisfying gym-date with super-model Heidi Albersten. Seriously.
