We usually know the story behind the photos we feature in our WTF? photo-caption contests. That isn't the case with this picture, which makes pure conjecture a lot more fun.
We came across a photo of what's billed as an experimental pizza-delivery vehicle on display at an automotive museum in South Dakota. When we call for a pie, we expect to see a clapped-out '93 Sentra with mismatched tires, but clearly Domino's and Triton envisioned a better world where giant dustbusters ferry pizzas in 30 minutes or less.
Folks from Domino's and the Pioneer Auto Show must not be fans of our previous contests, since they haven't sullied their reputations by responding to repeated requests for more information. That means its up to you to contribute a hilarious fictional history of a car that makes us ask, WTF?
We know nothing about this car. Aside from the famous logo on the hood, the only other clue we have to go on is the plaque in front of the car. It reads, "Triton No 1. Experimental Pizza Car. Presented to Famous Pioneer Auto Show, Murdo So. Dak. by Tom Monaghan, Founder of Dominos [sic] Pizza and owner of the Detroit Tigers."
Monaghan, the ultra-conservative Catholic philanthropist who sold the Tigers in 1992, is no slouch when it comes to cars. For awhile, he was an owner of one of the world's rarest automobiles, the legendary Bugatti Royale. Monaghan has financed a lot of his personal passions, from a Catholic law school to an island enclave of homes based on Frank Lloyd Wright's designs, so we wouldn't be surprised if he took development of the car seriously.
