Robert Rodat, the screenwriter of Saving Private Ryan, is working on a draft of Sam Raimi's forthcoming World of Warcraft movie.
Raimi told MTV Movies Blog that he has tasked Rodat with the difficult task of writing a faithful, cinematic adaptation of Blizzard's wildly popular online game. But he wouldn't confirm which particular Warcraft characters would make the cut.
"Our story may or may not be about one of those central characters," the director said.
At the very least, Raimi plans to leverage the conflict between the Horde and Alliance for the game. Broad strokes may work best: World of Warcraft takes place in a fairly rich world, one that would be hard to fully explore in a mere two hours. It would be impossible to flesh out every race in one sitting. It could very well be that Raimi and Rodat will narrow their scope for their first outing.
"I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true," Raimi told MTV, suggesting that the movie's producers would probably "choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game" rather than try to deliver all of Azeroth in one go.
