For cool genre DVDs, box sets and gift boxes, it's not beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
The Christmas product rush comes later. This is still autumn, but we're still being treated to Futurama complete sets, remastered versions of British comedy classics, Doctor Who specials and other cool genre material.
Here are some of the choice DVD options making the rounds for Wired.com readers:
Futurama: The Complete Collection: For a show as popular as Futurama, it really isn't necessary for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to trot out some gimmick to sell DVDs. But, let's be glad they did. This complete collection of the show's broadcast episodes and each of its straight-to-DVD movies comes stuffed into Bender's head.
Fawlty Towers__ and Black Adder remastered__: BBC America is unpacking pristine new DVD releases for two ultimate classics of British comedy. Often referred to as the best sitcom in history, the restored version of John Cleese's Fawlty Towers offers every episode of the show with new essential commentary. The Black Adder collection assembles all four incarnations of the series and it's one-off reunion special, along with a tasty set of special features.
The Simpsons Complete Season 12: The latest DVD of the soon-to-be longest-running episodic show in American TV history finally gives Comic Book Guy the cover he's so long deserved.
Marvel Animation 6 Film Set: Just as Warner Bros. Animation made some of the best movies about DC Comics characters (at least until The Dark Knight), Marvel's animated movies have often proven more entertaining than their live-action counterparts (at least until Iron Man). This six-DVD set includes Ultimate Avengers: The Movie, Ultimate Avengers 2, The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and Hulk Vs.
Doctor Who: "Planet of the Dead" and "The Next Doctor: With David Tennant's final three stories as The Doctor coming in November and December, BBC America brings us the first two Doctor Who specials of 2009 on DVD. "The Next Doctor" was last year's Christmas special and features the Cyberman, while "Planet of the Dead" took Tennant and his co-stars to the deserts of Dubai.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut(Blu-ray edition): The high-res arrival of this musical comedy masterpiece comes with the extra bonus of new commentary by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
