It's heartbreaking stuff. But equally important, Farrell's involuntary "embed" provides a glimpse of the insurgent organization in northern Afghanistan. With a keen eye for detail, Farrell notes everything from the Taliban's operational security (abysmal), their equipment and financing (marginal) and their control of parts of Kunduz Province (near absolute).
