Welcome weekend warriors. Hope your plans for this long labor day weekend include something super geeky. Chances are, you are reading this update on your iPhone while sitting in a panel at PAX or DragonCon. That's just fine by me. I have a stack of Batman comics myself to tear through this weekend, so I'm good. On with the GeekDad week in review!
There were a lot of great posts this week, but only one gets the explicit distinction of being the post of the week. This week it goes to a timely post by our esteemed editor Ken Denmead. As soon as the new broke that Disney bought Marvel, Ken was on it like stink on year old cheese that's been sitting behind the fridge. With contributions from fellow GeekDad's, Ken quickly posted the top 10 movies we're dreading now that Disney owns Marvel. Hilarity ensued. Check it out!
Honorable mention goes to John Madden's more in-depth piece on the buyout, why Disney buying Marvel might not be a bad thing.
Living in the Northeast? Then you may notice it's a bit of a Waterworld. While the rain keeps you inside, perhaps you can finish your Epilog Mystery Box. Guest blogger Eric Zimmerman stops by to take us on a confluence hunt and Jenny Williams reminds us that September 26 is free museum day!
Need a new Wii game that's a kid pleaser? Give Spectrobes Origins a whirl. What were the top RPG's of 2008? I can't remember. I also didn't remember it was Dee Bradley Baker's birthday. Ken did though. Corrina Lawson takes us to Quassy park, and Ken stays on top of the new with the aforementioned post of the week.
Sometimes the best comics are the ones that aren't published by DC or Marvel. Here's some that are off the mainstream path. It's the 40th anniversary of Nerf, and they are giving away stuff. You know you want. Maybe Disney buying Marvel isn't such a bad thing after all. What are you so scared of fanboys? Finally, Chuck Lawton looks at seven things that are pretty cool about Windows 7 parental controls. No wait - there's more! Play Monopoly using real streets, check outÜberstix building system and don't try to escape Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks.
GeekDad Podcast Episode #51 dropped, and it would have been awesome! Make it a Wubbzy Halloween for your kids, grab your tinfoil hats because Martian Fluxx is coming, IL-2 Sturmovik gets your propellers spinning and get your dinosaurs and your dna gun and meet me online.
When geek music and culture collide, it's called w00tstock. Is life more fun with pretend friends? Of course it is. Scared of social media? Well, @cebsilver (hey - that's me) says that there is really nothing to fear but fear itself. Paul Govan continues his Wii Sports Resort reviews with Beachside Frisbee and we hop in the GeekDad wayback machine to look at ten geeky movies to raise your kids on.
Great Geek Debates returns with Harry Potter versus LoTR. It's not too late to vote, but Harry Potter doesn't stand a chance. Drinking this labor day weekend? Of course you are. Why don't you try one of these geeky cocktails? Pensacola has braced for a lot of hurricanes, but now they have to brace for a nerd invasion. Which is worse? Finally, DC's Wednesday Comics are loaded with adventure, and Tony Sims finds some out of the box fun with Out of the Box Publishing board games.
One last thing, are you going to DragonCon this weekend? GeekDad is representing. Natania Barron (hanging around the Steampunk corsets or playing with a sword in a crowded room) and her esteemed sidekick/husband Michael Harrison (lurking deep in the D&D dungeon, sweaty hands gripping a handful of multi-sided dice, breath stinking of whiskey and Mountain Dew) will be there all weekend. Be sure to stalk them out and say hi!
That's it for another great week at GeekDad! Thanks for reading! Have a fun & safe labor day weekend!
