coastieAs the United States commemorates the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Coast Guard may have inadvertently caused a security scare. As President Barack Obama crossed the Memorial Bridge on the way back from a memorial service at the Pentagon, reports were heard on police scanners that the Coast Guard had fired 10 rounds of ammunition.

The Coast Guard just released a statement saying that reports of gunfire on the Potomac may have been based on overheard radio calls made over a training frequency.

"We are still gathering information of how this training event might have been misconstrued as an actual incident," the service said in a news release. "We will conduct a thorough review of this incident."

According to the Coast Guard news release, Coast Guard boats were operating in the vicinity of the 14th Street and Memorial Bridges this morning, but it's unclear whether or not these were the same boats involved in the training exercise. Let's hope the Air Force isn't planning any training exercises over Manhattan today, either.
