Outrageous auteur Quentin Tarantino has named controversial Japanese film Battle Royale his favorite movie of the past 19 years.

The 2000 movie by director Kinji Fukasaku topped Tarantino's list of the most influential films made since his own 1992 breakthrough, Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino made the pronouncement this weekend during a segment on U.K. channel Sky Movies (video embedded above). His bloody World War II movie Inglorious Basterds hits theaters Friday.

Also on Tarantino's list: The Wachowski brothers' sci-fi classic The Matrix (although the Pulp Fiction director said he downgraded the film after its two sequels "ruined the mythology" for him).

Tarantino also gave props to zombie howler Shaun of the Dead and madcap marionette movie Team America: World Police, and called M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable "a brilliant retelling of the Superman mythology."
