Wii Sports Resort was the top-selling U.S. game in July, according to the NPD Group report.

Sales were down for the fifth consecutive month, bringing 2009's sale shortfall to $8.16 billion. That's down 14 percent from last year. But NPD analyst Anita Fraser sees a light at the end of the tunnel.

"While year-to-date results are weak," she said, "there are some big titles set to be released over the next several months, including Madden this month, which should help spur sales."

The thin July release slate left room for many Nintendo evergreens to re-enter the top ten. Electronic Arts had success with the debut of their college sports game NCAA Football 10, continued sales for Fight Night Round 4 and the return of their EA Sports Active Bundle to the chart (though it did so by moving a little over 96,000 units).
