Hunter @surelyholmes interviewed Frank Ahearn, author of How to Disappear, and a source for Evan Ratliff's feature article in the September issue. Here is the transcript:
SH: Thank-you for agreeing to answer some questions. For starters, a fair amount of background information is known, but very little that relates to where Evan is or where he may have gone since disappearing. What advice would you give to the searchers? And when Evan interviewed you for the feature did he discuss his planned disappearance with you or ask you for advice before he vanished?
FA: The one thing to keep in mind is the information Evan or an associate provides may not be correct it could be disinformation or misinformation.
For starters, I would work backwards on his blog, twitter and other social networking sites because he may have posted clues prior to publishing of the article. The key to skip tracing is not looking for the clues of where he may have gone but looking for the clues he may have left behind.
Also carefully look at other people posting about him, it could be Evan posting and leaving real clues. Search for a pattern from other posters.
I would carefully analyze the verbiage of the post and clues; he will probably use anagrams like the Di Vinci Code numbers most likely longitude and latitude but disguised or rearranged. The numbers could be phone numbers jumbled too.
When Evan interviewed me, he asked questions about disappearing but never disclosed he was going to do a vanishing act.
