Another week, another day closer to the 2010 school season. As we start into August, we remember the old adage of the calm before the storm. As you go through the posts from this past week it may seem like we all took a step back from the frenzied July and settled down a bit. Perhaps, or perhaps we're gearing up for the rest of the month. I'm not promising anything, but stay tuned for some great posts from some great writers. For now, let's look back at last week with the GeekDad week in review!
Quick - Star Wars or Star Trek? Can't decide? Well, neither can most of the populace. With the votes fluctuating between being tied and one or the other taking the lead, our Great Geek Debate: Star Wars vs. Star Trek asked us to decide which we liked best. I only voted for Trek because there were only six Star Wars movies, and there is tons of Trek. Though I'd be more likely to dress up like Obi-Wan than like a Starfleet officer. Plus the toys were much cooler. It's that kind of diatribe that made this debate our post of the week.
Need an IKEA product that kids can build with and is a long acronym? How about the BYGGA construction set?* Ms. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH* was a book before it was a movie. Check out our review. Before checking in with the GeekDad Flickr group, how about checking out Robot 13, a comic about a robot with a floating skull for a head. Fun!
Design a mystery box, win an engraved iPod Touch. Nuff said. Brad Moon tells of a magical visit to Prince Edward island, and* Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs* animator David Gibson gets his 15 minutes in this interview. Rounding out the day, The LEGO Click! Awards salute brainy kids, and Chuck Lawton gives us part three of his great series on the XO-1 Laptop.
Start off the day by slipping into one of these stylish geek shirts from Atoms Apparel. For kids, the Age of Aquarius game, for adults - Ninja Assassin and five geeky facts you should know. Jenny Williams talks* Indexed*, seeing life through Venn Diagrams and Graphs - always fun. Finally, enter this contest and race to the moon!
Miss this weeks podcast? It's a podcast, you can't miss it. Go check it out now. Hey, it's Shark Week - do you know where your kids are? The Great Geek Debate is hotter than ever with Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Tom Angleberger plays with a kid friendly catapult, the Pathfinder RPG is sold out (bummer) and Doug Cornelius has fantastic seats at Fenway.
You can decorate your own skateboard with Zazzle. Really, you can. Directors Chris Miller & Phil Lord stop by to answer a few questions about Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Natania Barron brings us five tips for raising your girl geek. Have you heard? Captain America is making a return from the dead (but still lost in time) and Jonathan Liu continues with his series on how to have a Board Game night. Finally, Paul Govan questions if video games can actually be meaningful and the late, great Gary Gygax is getting honored with a statue.
Netblox turned out to be a bit challenging to configure, Paul Govan gets interviewed on BBC Radio to talk family gaming and this week Kevin Makice learned everything he knows about parenting from Adrian Monk. Hey, Doctor Horrible is coming back, embroidering an Etch-a-Sketch is a great geeky craft, but if you want to go with modern technology, ArtRage is all the rage. To cap out the week, THE Dean Kamen explains why he started the FIRST Robotics Competition.
Be sure to tune in next week for more great posts! Thanks for reading!
