Funcom announced the first expansion to its massively multiplayer online game* Age of Conan* on Tuesday at Germany's interactive gaming show Gamescom.
The Norwegian developer unveiled details for Rise of the Godslayer, which is based on Robert E. Howard's "The Tower of the Elephant" and introduces a new storyline set in the Empire of Khitai.
The expansion will also add new features to the game, such as the culture of Khitan, faction gameplay and an alternate advancement system. Players can also expect new quests, weapons, combat abilities, spells and mounts (pictured).
"Our focus now is on expanding on the strengths of the game by providing massive new regions of the world to explore, and the Empire of Khitai offers a whole new perspective on the Conan lore and universe," said game director and executive producer Craig Morrison in a press release.
Though Age of Conan initially sold well when it launched last year in May, shipping over 1.2 million copies worldwide, the game has been plagued with design and technical issues ever since.
Matters weren't helped when subscriber numbers began to fall and top-level executives resigned from the company.
However, Morrison contended that *Age of Conan *has "evolved leaps and bounds." The company recently held a re-evaluation campaign offering two weeks' free play to tout the overall fixes and improvements to the game.
With Rise of the Godslayer, Funcom aims to deliver more compelling reasons to play their 15-month-old game. Think you'll give it a second chance?
No release window was revealed, but Funcom stated that the expansion has been in development since the beginning of the year, and it's currently playable at Gamescom.
