Nearly a month after director James Cameron unveiled the first footage of his sci-fi epic Avatar at Comic-Con International, an "Avatar Day" event will give viewers a lengthy look at the movie's exotic 3-D world.
"The extended look at Avatar will unspool only on Aug. 21 — and only in 3-D — in select theaters and IMAX," according to a studio press release Thursday. "Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon." Avatar movie and videogame trailers will roll out that day as well, in theaters and online.

The movie, conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, centers on the alien world of Pandorum, a strange and beautiful planet filled with bizarre creatures and plant life. Sam Worthington plays a paraplegic who is linked through a medical process to an "avatar," a 10-foot-tall, blue-skinned creature that looks like Pandorum's native Na'vi (pictured).
Filmed in stereoscopic 3-D using cameras developed by Cameron, expectations for the big-budget Avatar have been set extremely high. The movie had been shrouded in secrecy prior to the director's Comic-Con presentation last week. Avatar hits theaters Dec. 18.
