The conventional wisdom is that videogames and movies don’t mix. But that's not stopping Hollywood and gamemakers from trying to be the first great exception.

Horror website Bloody Disgusting said last week that James Wan, writer and director of the original Saw, is now in negotiations with Konami to help adapt its classic horror franchise Castlevania for the big screen. Konami is producing a videogame based on Saw this year.

Wan’s vision for the movie is to stick closely to the East-meets-West vibe of the original videogames. "The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he said.

While Saw isn’t exactly high art (or ground-breaking horror, for that matter), Wan may be a good fit. His promo for EA sci-fi game Dead Space underlined the common ground between cinematic scares and videogame horror.

Several directors and production companies have been attached to Castlevania before, including Mortal Kombat director Paul W.S. Anderson and Stomp the Yard’s Sylvian White. According to Variety, Wan will bring along Ian Jeffers, the writer behind 2007's Death Sentence, to handle the script.
