Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the portable Nintendo DS version of Rockstar's hit carjacking criminal sandbox franchise, will be released on PSP this fall, the publisher said Monday.

Rockstar said that the game would feature upgraded graphics and new story missions, but did not release any screens of the PSP version. It will be released on disc and for direct download.

Given that early sales of the DS version of Chinatown Wars were considered to be disappointing, perhaps a release on PSP will put the game in front of a more receptive audience.

Even so, it's quite odd to see a game ported from the DS to the PSP, considering how totally different the two platforms are.

Wasn't it N'Gai Croal who was talking about following a development strategy that flips common wisdom on its head -- develop for low-end platforms first, then port up to higher-end hardware? Considering that Chinatown Wars, in all its low-res glory, has a higher Metacritic rating than any PSP game, perhaps Rockstar is on to something.
