Wired.com asked for your blowback on Star Trek, and man, did we get it. Boosted no doubt by the prospect of winning a fat Blu-ray pack of classic Trek movies, more than 700 commenters weighed in on J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot.
Comments ran roughly four to one in favor of the shiny new sequel and were, for the most part, thoughtful and insightful. Some takes went deep with detailed analysis. Meiray, for example, penned a 1,656-word mixed review that included a negative take on the movie's alpha evildoer:
"Eric Bana’s Nero is as thinly sketched and haphazardly motivated as the weakest of Trek villains, that includes V’Ger and those space whale-lovers. He is a plot device meant to provide cool sets, dastardly evil and shoehorn Leonard Nimoy into the script for the nostalgic canon-obsessed script supervisors in the audience."
At the other extreme, commenter Benabik summed up the pro-Star Trek consensus in a couple of pithy lines, calling the movie "a fresh and snappy reboot of the original. Kudos for breaking the odd-number curse and honoring the old without just slavishly copying it."
As for the DVD giveaway promised last week, drum roll please: The commenters who will receive free Blu-ray disc packages of Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection are stlbud and andocalrissian. The prize-winners were picked at random from the comments section, but both winners gave Abrams' Trek positive reviews.
"New movie was great," wrote andocalrissian, "can't wait for a sequel."
Priced at $105 and slated to hit retail Tuesday, Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection packages the first six Star Trek films, digitally remastered in high definition. A bonus disc serves up a 70-minute round-table discussion between original Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation actors William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes.
