A hacker claims to have infiltrated Steve Jobs' Amazon.com account, and he's hoping to sell the CEO's private information to journalists.
The hacker, who calls himself "orin0co," claims he fooled Jobs with a phishing scam to gain access to his Amazon account. Jobs' account history suggests he's a shopaholic who has purchased 20,000 items from Amazon in the last 10 years, the hacker claims.
“I got myself a hold of this information,” the hacker wrote in an e-mail sent from a secure Hushmail account to Cult of Mac's Leander Kahney. “No one else has it. I didn’t misuse it, otherwise Mr. Jobs would long ago change his login detail, wouldn’t he?”
orin0co says he phished Jobs' information with a fraudulent e-mail that directed him to a fake Amazon web site, where he entered his login details.
The hacker told Kahney he has no intention to sell the information for "low money." And it's clear why: Jobs is as secretive about his life (especially his health) as he is with running Apple. Also, Jobs is currently on medical leave due to "complex" health issues, so any illuminating information about the CEO could look like gold to a journalist.
However, Kahney notes the hacker's claims are fishy, as the only proof he provides is a screenshot, which purportedly reveals that Jobs only made three purchases over the holiday period, and the last purchase was made October 2008. Also, screenshots are extremely easy to fake using Adobe Photoshop.
Apple did not respond to requests for comment.
