'PSP Go' Video: Sony Leaks Own E3 News

And here I thought we were going to have to wait until Tuesday’s press conference to find out the details of Sony’s new PSP.

Seems as if the next issue of Qore, Sony’s downloadable PlayStation 3 propaganda video, has become available early to subscribers, and there’s a massive video feature about the new PSP redesign. Most of the rumors are true: It’s got a sliding screen that hides the button layout, uses a Memory Stick Micro for storage, doesn’t have a UMD drive, etc. Only thing it doesn’t seem to have is a touch interface.

The video also talks about — but doesn’t show — unannounced new PSP entries in the Metal Gear Solid, Jak, and Gran Turismo franchises.

With the cat well and truly out of the bag, my question is: Was this intentional? If Sony wanted to create a lot of buzz around the product, this seems like a great way to do it:  “Leak” a professionally-produced video about the product the weekend before E3 by making said video available to their loyal base of subscribers, then letting them do all the promotional work.

Sure, maybe this is an honest-to-goodness screw-up, but what actually “leaked” here? Note that although host Veronica Belmont and Sony’s John Koller discuss the hardware and upcoming games, they don’t spend too much time talking about or playing them.

And although the entire post-E3 “issue” of Qore is available, it doesn’t contain any information about any of Sony’s other announcements at the show — just this single, contained piece of information about what the device will look like.

Actual goof, or clever viral stunt?
