The first season of Fringe concludes Tuesday night with the long-awaited arrival of mysterious mogul/scientist William Bell, played by Leonard Nimoy.

The Star Trek veteran actor portrays the mastermind behind Massive Dynamics, the giant corporation that has its hand in a crazed range of mutant events that fuel the series' X-Files-style crime drama. The mysteries are steadily probed by FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (played by Anna Torv), mad scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson).

Describing the season finale during a Friday conference call, Fringe co-creator J.J. Abrams said: "This is a massive turning point in the mythology of the show. It's the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next."

Abrams said he pulled Nimoy, who reprises his Spock character in Abrams' Star Trek reboot, into the Fringe fold by "essentially begging. I explained to Mr. Nimoy that there was this critical character who has been mentioned throughout the first season and that it was a big deal for the show – not just where William Bell came from and his back story, but where he was going."

Fringe, renewed last week, can be expected to spin its global conspiracy mythology forward next fall, Abrams said. "The first season has been about setting up this world and identifying the enemy. I know I'm being insanely vague, but Season 2 is going to be about getting to know the enemy."
