An Australian man who fixed a Pope mannequin to the roof the family sedan is claiming victory for free speech this week.

Sydney police cited the vehicle last July at a World Youth Day rally, and fined driver Ian Bryce $81, saying it was likely to cause a distraction. Charges were dropped Monday, apparently ending the case, which had drawn considerable interest locally.

Bryce, who is a member of the Secularist Party of Australia, said the mod was intended as a political statement. "I'm very pleased. I think it's a great victory for free speech and the right to criticize religion," he told Australia's news.com.au.
