Are you excited for the upcoming downloadable Battlefield 1943? Can't wait to fly the skies over Wake Island, dropping bombs on awestruck foot soldiers? According to an announcement made this morning, the experience will set you back $15.
Describing the game as "endless hours of multiplayer fun" and "legendary WWII battlefield action and destruction," the official release from publisher Electronic Arts and series creator DICE offers the price tag, alongside a reminder that the game will be available on both the PlayStation Network Store and Xbox Live Marketplace this June.
A PC version of the title is scheduled for release this September, presumably with the same $15 price tag.
I fully accept DICE and EA essentially repackaging the best maps from the classic multiplayer shooter Battlefield 1942
for modern consoles (and intend to spend many hours playing it), but
what use are PC gamers going to have for yet another helping?
Not only do they still have a surprisingly vibrant Battlefield 1942 community propping up the original game, but two of its best maps (those same ones included in 1943) were already remade for Battlefield Vietnam. Offering yet another version of the same content is only going to fragment the playerbase.
Plus, adding gameplay changes to theoretically entice gamers to give 1943
a shot is a surefire way to upset longtime series fans -- and that's
assuming the changes are seen as a positive addition.
God help them if
they botch the gameplay.
