One of our intrepid readers caught a photo of this solar tricycle in Palo Alto, California and figured it'd be a shoe-in for an Autopia WTF? contest. He was right.
It appears that someone with a better knowledge of welding than aesthetics decided to combine the front half of a cheap, two-stroke motorbike and the rear half of a utility trailer. To top it off, a pivoting photovoltaic panel provides power and protection for the rider when it swings up to create a battery charger that doubles as a roof.
It couldn't look more ridiculous any cooler if it were mounted to an old-timey penny-farthing, which is why we want to give you the chance to create a caption for it.
While we already know the whole story behind this three-wheeled, human-and-wind-powered vehicle, it's more fun to read pure uninformed conjecture. Submit your witticism and an e-mail address into the Reddit widget. The top vote-getter gets a cool prize. No e-mail address = no prize.
Even if you choose to remain anonymous, we think you'll have an easier time poking fun at this contraption than building a replica -- especially considering that The Solar Bike Blog's rules for how to build such a beast include directives such as "save up enough money to live on for at least 6 months" and "quit your job or arrange to take an extended sabbatical leave."
Entries are due by whenever we post the winner. For inspiration, check out the Autopia KGB Chrysler WTF?, the Autopia 2008 L.A. Auto Show WTF?, Autopia WTF? Art Car and the Autopia WTF? Detroit Auto Show photo caption contests. Good luck, and don't forget your sunscreen!
Hat-tip to Gene for the pic. Thanks!
