When it came time to design merchandise for the new Star Trek movie, Playmates Toys faced a decision: should they make products for kids to play with or focus on collectibles that adult fans can keep in pristine condition?
Judging from the boxful of not-yet-released Trek toys previewed here, Playmates decided to split the difference by reaching out to both markets.
Three lines of action figures will be arriving in toy stores soon, offering you. Young Kirk, Spock and company in three sizes.
- The 3.75 inch Galaxy Collection figures are well-suited for kiddie hands and fit perfectly into larger play sets (like the Transporter Room above). This is the child-friendly size required by every sci-fi movie franchise ever since Kenner introduced Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia mini-dolls back in 1977. Each Galaxy figure comes with a collectible piece of the Bridge set. Figures are expected to retail for about $8, while the play sets will sell for approximately $35.
- The six-inch Warp Collection (right) reminds me of the first great Star Trek toys. Slightly smaller than the Mego action figures from the mid 1970s, these six-inch figures can be more easily posed and come with utility belts, phasers and other accessories. Geared more toward adult collectors, the Warp figures are priced at about $12.
- The 12-inch Command Collection Trek dolls (below) boast the sturdy mass and detail of classic G.I. Joe figures. Aimed at adult collectors, they come attired with clothes detailed to look like the movie characters and sell for $35 each.
Playmate also offers ship models, weapons and other props, but we didn't get samples to play with examine. After all, there's only so much room in the toy box.
