If there's one thing the puzzle-strategy genre sorely lacks, it's the ability to brusquely shuttle hordes of adorable critters off to the great beyond. Bloody Fun Day might not feature a deep or even logical narrative, but it's got style in spades, bolstered by simple, fun game mechanics.
The game takes place on a board populated by Cuties, and your Grim Reaper. To move about the board, click on a Cutie that's next to you. You'll eviscerate it and any of its adjacent, identical brethren, and move onto the now empty spot. Dead Cuties will be replaced by eggs, while the spaces you've abandoned will decay, and become uninhabitable.
Every few turns all of the eggs on the board will hatch, revealing new Cuties, while all of the spaces you've abandoned will be replaced with fresh eggs. Kill an egg before it has hatched, and you'll lose a few hit points.
Actually, every kill your Reaper makes will drain hit points, and the game ends once you've run out. Kill red Cuties to get more hit points. Kill blue, yellow, and black Cuties to gain the soul-energy you need to activate some of your super reaper powers. These range from leaping over a space to avoid an egg, to smiting entire groups of Cuties from a distance – handy for those hard to reach red Cuties.
There are two game types to choose from: 5 Level Mode is a useful for getting a feel for the game's mechanics, but the real fun lies in the marathon-esque Unlimited Mode, where the critter-massacre doesn't stop until you do. Eggs take longer to hatch after every turn, which can lead to some delightfully irritating close shaves. The only goal is to compete for points and Kongregate achievements, but aren't bragging rights their own reward?
