Want a guaranteed spot in the upcoming Star Trek Online beta test? Developer Cryptic Entertainment wants you to tell them a story in exchange.

Last week the firm announced the "Planet Exploration Contest," a short story sweepstakes that asks prospective virtual red shirts to pen a 500-word answer to the following questions:

Part of the adventure that comes from exploring strange new worlds is discovering that planet's history and hearing the stories of its inhabitants. Imagine you have just entered orbit around the planet pictured here. Your mind races with the possibilities of what you will find. What is the planet's name? What or who lives there? Are they peaceful or antagonistic, welcoming or outright hostile? Are they long gone leaving only more mysteries to solve?

Entrants have until January 29 to submit their tale. Cryptic's official rules page notes that entries will be judged on "originality, creativity, presentation and spelling and grammar," so if you plan on sending in a gripping tale of Kirk and Spock's forbidden romantic dalliances make sure you spell "smooch" correctly.
