While Warner Bros. was expected to ask the judge in the Watchmen rights dispute to make a final ruling sooner than the scheduled Jan. 20 date, any such request was put on hold while both sides began discussing a possible settlement.

According to Deadline Hollywood, U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess held off any change to his scheduled ruling date Friday as Warners Bros. and 20th Century Fox reported preliminary progress in working out a deal that would make Fox go away so Watchmen could arrive on time for its March 6 release date.

There's no clear word yet on whether Fox is looking for a lump cash settlement or a share of distribution revenues. Regardless of how a deal comes together, the case now appears headed toward the more sensible resolution many experts expected. But, the deal could sour again faster than Rorschach's mood.
