After months of speculation in the tabloid press and countless bets placed on British books on a myriad of suspects, the BBC will announce the identity of the 11th actor to portray Doctor Who in a U.K broadcast Saturday.
A special episode of the behind-the-scenes show Doctor Who Confidential will reveal the new lead actor following in the footsteps of William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Names rumored to be in the running include Robert Carlyle, James Nesbitt, Paterson Joseph, Bill Nighy and Colin Salmon.
The next Doctor will begin shooting the series next summer — as Tennant remains in the role in a series of specials set to air in 2009.
