Here's a window into why the gaming industry is 'recession-proof': there are a whole lot of gamers. According to a Pew Internet survey, more than half of adults are gamers, in addition to almost every teen.
As you might expect, the older you are the less likely you are to be a gamer. The decrease is not particularly drastic given the generational divide. 40% of adults aged 50-64 get their game on. Nearly one in four of those 65 or older spend some time behind the screen playing.
In fact, the oldest group in the study is significantly more likely to play games daily. That's likely due to the popularity of casual games, which make it easy to drop in and play without a long term commitment.
Adults use their computer for gaming more than any other device. Consoles, cell phones and portable devices that are popular with teens aren't so much with adults. There is a youth influence at work, though. Parents are more likely to be gamers and to play on different devices than non-parents.
