While he waits to take over control of the Tardis as the new executive producer of Doctor Who in 2010, Steven Moffat is updating Sherlock Holmes for BBC1.

Moffat (smiling above) is putting his three-time Hugo Award-winning pen to work on a 21st-century version of the adventures of Holmes, John Watson and Professor Moriarty, according to The Guardian.

Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen) will join Moffat as a writer on the series that stars the wonderfully named Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as Watson.

The series starts shooting next month and will take a much different tack than the upcoming film from Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. While Ritchie's feature envisions classic Victorian Holmes in period costume with modern action, Moffat will move 221b Baker St. to modern London and lighten the feel comedically.
