Gumbysnl_lNew casting reports (translated: "load of bollocks") arrived Wedneday on the still-unconfirmed third Batman film by Christopher Nolan -- sending some panicked fans out to burn copies of* Beverly Hills Cop II* (which is not the worst idea, generally).

Trailing close behind the spiked, 3-inch heels of E Online's speculation that Rachel Weisz was set to star as Catwoman comes a report in the U.K.'s ever-reliable The Sun, listing Eddie Murphy (pictured right as Gumby, dammit) as The Riddler for Nolan's trilogy capper.

The virtual ink didn't dry on that "world exclusive" before other sites rushed to shoot it down. The Sun has the advantage of reporting movie news without any sources or substantiation, so perhaps the online rush to judgment of the debunked story was justified. We're not saying they make this stuff up, but The Sun had Stephen Hawking playing The Joker before Heath Ledger took the part.

Eddie Murphy as The Riddler? It's difficult to think of a worse fabricated casting choice for a Batman villain. Madeleine Albright as Poison Ivy? Men Without Hats as The Mad Hatter? A dead ocelot as The Penguin?
