As jubilant as citizens of the world were over America's election of Barack Obama, much of the joy came from the prospect of the end of the Bush administration.
It's hard to express the scope and depth of President Bush's unpopularity outside of the United States, but a glance at newspaper editorials around the world helps to tell the story.
The editorial that wins the prize for being the most blunt comes from Russia's Pravda, which offered the following:
Meanwhile, the conservative *Daily Telegraph *in Britain calls Obama's election victorya watershed moment that "marks a rite of passage" for the United States, but warns that Western allies worry that he could be an "isolationist and protectionist president."
Nevertheless, the editorial's writers note that Obama "could transform America's view of itself and the world's view of America, which has rarely been more reviled."
