The FCC voted on Tuesday to free the white space spectrum (pdf), over the loud objections of a small army of broadcasters and wireless microphone users, including Dolly Parton and Joel Osteen.

The order -- which the FCC Commissioners voted for on Tuesday -- will allow unlicensed devices in a band of unused spectrum that lies between television channels. The spectrum is expected to deliver what Google characterizes as "WiFi on steroids." Television broadcasters, however, have argued that opening the space up would interfere with transmission.
