In fact, they looked more teenager-esque than Starfleet cadet-ish. (I checked, and it's OK to turn nouns into adjectives in the 23rd century.) Rather than resembling academy-age versions of Kirk, Spock and crew, the faces in early stills from the movie look like the Enterprise passed through some cosmic cloud that reverted the officers to the age of prom-goers at Zefram Cochran High School.

Perhaps in an effort to "dirty" the look of the movie's promotional material -- and to lend a little more dark gravitas to those same fresh, damp-eared faces -- the movie's website revealed new downloadable posters of Kirk (right) and Spock in moody black.

Maybe Abrams hopes the gloomy shadows hide space acne better.
