Darpa is looking to build a machine that can fly like an airplane -- and swim underwater, like a submarine. It's been attempted before -- check out this sketch from 1934, below. Graham Warwick wonders whether the project is even remotely possible, after all these years of trying. The structural, powerplant, and wing-placement conundrums all seem bordering on the insolvable. Or maybe they're just "Darpa-hard."
