Update: I e-mailed Blizzard to see if they might divulge who actually makes up the 11 million subscribers and whether their figure includes those no longer playing the game – a number of other MMOs include any player who has ever had an account in their world. Blizzard however, claims that all 11 million people they tallied are active players within World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft now boasts more than 11 million subscribers, Blizzard Entertainment announced this morning.
The current steady growth evidenced by these latest figures is impressive both because WoW has a 4-year anniversary coming up in November, but also due to the large number of big-name, competing MMOs that have been released during WoW's lifespan which never saw even one-tenth of Blizzard's subscriber base.
As usual with any official subscriber rates revealed for any MMO, these numbers most likely include gamers who signed up for a month and stopped playing. Since every MMO company reveals similarly "enhanced" subscriber rates, however, comparing the numbers directly is still (relatively) valid.
