Activision's world-beating music social Guitar Hero needs no powerhouse celebrities to lip-sync its virtues. But the gamer empire is probably so flush with cash these days that signing Kobe Bryant, Tony Hawk, Alex Rodriguez and Michael Phelps to spread its latest sonic gospel of love, otherwise known as Guitar Hero World Tour, was a no-brainer.

But did it have to be this commercial? I mean, four iconic athletes shouldn't be wasted on Tom Cruise and Bob Seger. Yet they are, in this short, underwear-friendly homage to Tom Cruise's half-naked, home-alone stomp from Risky Business.

C'mon, Guitar Hero! Your newest offering, out on Monday, boasts esoteric but sick shredders like At the Drive-In's "One Armed Scissor" and crossover blasters like Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" and even Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot." That last one would have been perfect for a NBA superstar like Kobe Bryant, who is known to rarely miss a shot that he never refuses to take, often at the expense of his team. I mean, Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" isn't even on Guitar Hero World Tour, to get nerdy about it. "Hollywood Nights" made the cut.

this audio or video is no longer availableAdmit it, you just wanted to get Kobe, Phelps, Arod and Hawk in their underwear. (It looks like Kobe refused.) And that's just weird. But no worries, I'm still going to buy Guitar Hero World Tour, the finest music game on Earth. I'll just have to scrub my eyes before I play it.
