First swimming into the cultural mainstream 25 years ago, Phish became a full-fledged phenomenon before breaking up in 2004. On Wednesday, the genre-merging jammers returned to life and announced a series of tour dates in 2009.

Formed at the University of Vermont in 1983, the brainchild of Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman capitalized on everything from word-of-mouth buzz to Usenet groups to become one of the most successful crowd favorites in the history of music. Phish was set to celebrate that legacy with an eight-disc live set called At the Roxy on November 18 from their own label JEMP Records.

But it evidently felt that a full-blown reunion would be a much better party.

Tickets go on sale October 18 through the hated Ticketmaster, and there is a two-ticket limit. That leaves Phish-heads little time to breathe through their gills, but things move fast in the reunion biz.

Just ask My Bloody Valentine. Or The Verve. Or...
