From a founding member of post-rock pioneers Slint to ax shredder for new-millennial metalheads Dead Child, David Pajo has played either side of the sonic spectrum against the mainstream. So it stands to reason that his recently published Halloween-themed Imeem playlist would be an esoteric freakout perfectly built for the horrordome.
this audio or video is no longer availableOf course, Pajo isn't just about metal: The tireless musician, above at far left, has crafted solo vehicles like Papa M and starred in groups as varied as The Palace Brothers, Stereolab, Royal Trux, The For Carnation, Matmos, Tortoise and more. But his Imeem playlist is bloody with bands far outside metal's middle ground, including Asunder, Ghoul, Darkthrone, Bloodbath, Autopsy, Carcass, Coroner and more. In fact, the most recognizable bands in the mix are probably Cannibal Corpse and his own Dead Child.
Good thing he provides running commentary on the playlist, which features, as he explains, "thirteen songs I'd play at any Halloween party to wake up the devil for a few drinks. It's a fairly narrow (or wide) range of metal, depending on your politics."
That encyclopedic musical knowledge makes Pajo a perfect candidate for Listening Post's own Halloween feature, October Rocks. Papa M, please take your place among Gravediggaz, Puscifer, Metric and Little Tibia and the Fibias. And please don't eat all the black licorice. Save some for the undead.
