Sweden-based studios like Grin and DICE have been bringing a lot attention to the region of late, but it's not everyone who is sharing in the success.

Stockholm-based Avalanche Studios -- currently at work on the sequel to open-world action adventure title Just Cause -- plans to lay off 77 workers, half of the developer's current staff. Because of Swedish law, the layoffs could take some time.

The studio's director and co-founder Christofer Sundberg told Edge that "hopefully the negotiations we're in right now will go well, and no one has to go," but that the layoff plans are "based on what we can afford to keep right now."

According to Sundberg, the studio lost two publishing deals this year, putting it in a difficult situation. This leaves Avalanche with two titles still in production: Just Cause 2, and the free-to-play online hunting title The Hunter.
