Over at Foldschool they have taken that time honored tradition of children playing with the cardboard box with more gusto than the toy it contained one step further.

Foldschool provides 3 simple designs, downloadable as an easy-to-follow pdf, to help you create folded cardboard furniture. This means the next time you buy a new fridge, you are also buying a cardboard stool, chair and rocker.
Depending on the size of your fridge, of course.

The tools required are items you will find around your home. And in the “how to” section the process is explained in 12
simple steps.

This website comes complete with a philosophy that sounds like it comes straight out of a European Design School:
“Mass culture is run by superficiality and ecological absurdity. Foldschool supports craftsmanship as a face-to-face approach to design and brings together product and user the closest possible.”

FoldschoolHmmmm. And, I thought it was just origami with cardboard?

It might be something to engage older children in as a learning opportunity, but it is the end result that younger children will be interested in. This DIY product takes the child fascination with the cardboard box into the realm of design. Though, sometimes the kids might still be happier pretending the fridge box is a spaceship. I’ll leave it up to you to make that decision.
