Blu-ray is mostly a guy thing, but the high-definition DVD format is making inroads with women, mainly because they're more susceptible to in-store sales pitches, according to NPD, a market research firm (via VideoBusiness.com).
"Salespeople are apparently doing a better job of coaching women through the process," Russ Crupnick, an NPD analyst, told VideoBusiness.com. "That will be important, as women go into Target and Wal-Mart to buy a gift. Someone talking about the benefits [of Blu-ray] will help."
Crupnick says 12 percent of the women surveyed who bought Blu-ray players were influenced by the recommendations of salespeople, which was roughly twice the percentage of men who said the same.
We're not sure who these women are, but for our part, there's very little a teenage Target employee could say that would convince us to buy a Blu-ray player. Unless the pitch went something like, "They're giving these away for free if you buy a pair of socks."
