It's official: Virgin Comics has been "liquidated."
Founded in 2006 by Richard Branson, Deepak Chopra and more (including Chopra's awesomely named son, Gotham), Virgin Comics launched with a simple mission: Bring international narratives, especially those of indigenous Asia, to America and beyond.
But with Branson pulling the plug on Virgin's corporate backing, Virgin Comics has passed away, only to restructure, relocate to Los Angeles and rename itself Liquid Comics, according to a report on the Hero Complex blog.
The move to Los Angeles makes sense for Liquid, as Virgin's most successful series was probably its Director's Cut line. It included comics helmed by filmmakers like John Woo, Guy Ritchie, Edward Burns and more, and was rumored to have a comic with auteur and Monty Python artist Terry Gilliam in the works.
But Virgin Comics wasn't all about Hollywood. Ramayan 3392 A.D. was an apocalyptic series that upgraded the Ramayana for Generation Xbox, and even landed some sweet cover art (pictured), courtesy of superstar Alex Ross. Meanwhile, the astoundingly strange Grant Morrisson was in talks with Virgin to develop webisodes based on the Mah?bh?rata. Pretty cool stuff.
These future of these projects may be up in the air now as Branson bails and Liquid hammers itself into shape. But it's good to see the house is still on its feet, even if it did hand off a comic to porn queen Jenna Jameson.
