Spawning from the popularity of Twitter searches for political candidates – Sarah Palin’s been a “trending topic” now almost daily since her nomination – Twitter has launched its own Election 2008 site.

There is a “Hot election topics” section (currently include Katie Couric and David Letterman among others) and updates for both Obama and McCain’s campaign twitter feeds at the top. But the most interesting function is the real-time streaming tweets that mention any of the presidential or VP candidates' names.

This functionality was always possible on Twitter’s search engine (previously known as Summize) which they acquired several months ago. But now all of the political tweets are organized in one place. As long as the site doesn't crash or lag, it could be a convenient debate watching companion for real-time reactions.

Others have created political mashups from twitter feeds including Politweets and C-SPAN (with its convention feeds), and Current TV plans to run tweets over video of the debates.
