Fox unveiled seven minutes of footage Sunday from the upcoming big-budget remake of the sci-fi classic film, The Day the Earth Stood Still.
The preview (embedded) gives viewers a closer look at Keanu Reeves as alien messenger Klaatu and Jennifer Connolly as Helen, a Princeton-educated scientist recruited by the government to help mediate the situation.
Like many other recently announced movie reboots — Rocky Horror Picture Show, RoboCop,Poltergeist and Hellraiser to name a few — the reinterpretation of The Day the Earth Stood Still was met with skepticism by fans of the original 1951 version.
Certain parts of the preview look promising: an ultra-creepy interrogation sequence, a menacing split-second eyeful of Klaatu’s robot companion Gort and Reeves’ flat delivery seems appropriate for an alien humanoid.
But other aspects — like the CGI-heavy special effects and Klaatu’s environmental-heavy ultimatum to humankind — seem decidedly less so.
Watch the preview and weigh in: Will the remake be a cheesy wreck or will it set a precedent for the ever-growing slate of sci-fi and horror revamps in the pipeline?
The Day the Earth Stood Still hits theaters Dec. 12.
